Q. How long does it take for you to build my injection
mold? A. Lead times vary. You may not need a mold built in
a week, but conversly; 12 weeks might spell destruction for
your project. That's why we want to understand exactly what
your requirements are. Of course, the complexity of the mold
is the main determining lead time factor.
Q. My part
has an estimated annual usage of 500 pieces. How can I
possibly justify the expense of building a mold? A. All
molds are not created equal. The way you would build a mold to
produce 500 pcs. annually, would differ completely from the
way you would build the same mold to produce 500,000 annually.
Let us look at your project to help determine what kind of
mold is right for you.
Q. Who owns my mold? A. Your
mold is your distinct asset. You may move your mold at any
time to the molding vendor of your choice.
Q. What kind
of materials are most injection molds made from? A. This
depends on how the mold is to be used. Injection molds that
are intended for long use are usually built from hardened tool
steel. Limited run molds can be made from annealed alloy
steels or some types of aluminum. Visit our LINKS
PAGE for more on mold steels and materials.
Q. What
if I want to make changes to the mold at a later date? A.
Changes can usually always be made. However, it is best that
you try to anticipate any changes that may occur so that
appropriate accommodations can be made for them in the mold
ahead of time.
Q. What is the life expectancy of my
mold? A. This can vary quite a bit depending upon the type
of material the mold is made from. However, even a "soft" mold
can last for thousands of shots given the appropriate care on
the molding floor.
Q. I have my drawings completed.
What's my next step? A. Let us take a look at them and make
some recommendations. It won't cost you anything for us to
look!
